Welcome to Santa Cruz Guitar Company

Founded in 1976, the Santa Cruz Guitar Company brought boutique guitar making to the forefront of the steel string guitar business.  Richard Hoover invites you to watch this short film by LR Baggs, which documents the culture of SCGC’s small production lutherie and mission to provide musicians with exceptional instruments that truly change the world.

Santa Cruz Guitar

This Vintage Artist VA model dreadnought pays tribute to the original vintage artist, Doc Watson. Watson, who owned the prototype of the Vintage Artist, said, “This is the Dreadnought I’ve been looking for all my life.” In 1991, Richard Hoover collaborated with vintage experts to identify the most desirable qualities of the iconic Pre-War D-18. Maestro Watson’s contributions to the concept were born of an appreciation of the clarity of Mahogany’s tone and his requirements for playability. At the time, Doc had put as many hours into Rockabilly on a Les Paul as he had on the Dreadnought. His lack of preoccupation with a particular vintage model played perfectly with SCGC’s philosophy to ‘combine, not copy.’ After Doc’s test pilot duties on the prototype, he offered this thoughtful testimonial: “Son, what do I have to do to keep this guitar?”

We present this instrument as the tonal equal and technical superior to the most respected Pre-War guitars. To achieve the characteristic EQ and tone of the legendary Doc Watson, aka ‘the Vintage Artist,’ this instrument features an advanced, scalloped X-bracing for powerful bass, complemented by the clear tone and definition of master grade flamed Mahogany. Just shipped locally to @Sylvan Music here in Santa Cruz, CA! Reach out to Mike with any questions.

There are several world class guitar makers in America today, but none greater than Santa Cruz IMO.

Santa Cruz Guitar

Happy Traum is the musician’s musician, having supported and launched a hundred stellar careers and teaching the world to play guitar. From the beginnings in Washington Square, through Woodstock (the state of mind), and with many of today’s vibrant new acoustic artists, you’ve heard Happy’s personal rock-solid guitar and vocal presence at least 10,000 times. The number of times you’ve heard his influence in the recordings of others is incalculable.

Happy Traum was taking full advantage of Santa Cruz Guitar Company’s custom shop capabilities long before it became their norm. His first Santa Cruz was a Cocobolo/Adirondack H/13 model with a custom neck and finish; years later he worked with Richard once again to design an all Mahogany OM with wood bindings, abalone appointments and custom inlay. When Richard proposed they collaborate on an official Happy Traum Signature Model Guitar, they combined the tonal, aesthetic and playability elements that Happy enjoyed in both custom builds to come up with a winning recipe, now forever known as the HT/13.

Featuring Genuine Honduras Mahogany back/sides paired with salvaged old-growth Redwood and Adirondack bracing with hot hide glue in a small but deep bodied guitar delivers a bright, rich and clear tone with quick responsiveness, hearty low end and exceptional volume. The guitar is tastefully bound in ivoroid with abalone appointments and a custom top finish, rendering the HT/13 as stunning to behold as it is to play. Setup with our SCGC Parabolic Low Tension strings. Just shipped to Corzic Music in Longwood, FL! Reach out to Ken with any questions!

She is a stunner. Tuned her up to pitch and I don’t know how to say this. She has made every other guitar in my collection weep. I own some mighty fine instruments, two of your OMs, a Collings OM, a Bourgeois D Vintage Heirloom, a Huss and Dalton TD-R. This 1934 D feels and sounds like it’s in a class of its own.  I am so grateful to your shop’s attention to detail and craftsmanship. I’ve played a few Brazilian backed guitars in the past (Martin, Taylor and Bourgeois) and can appreciate the tonal difference between Brazilian and East Indian rosewood. Brazilian just sounds so much sweeter, has a more balanced sound, and more controlled and pleasing overtones than East Indian. However none of the other Brazilian guitars inspired me to pay the extra money for them, and those guitars were half the price of the 1934 D. Santa Cruz isn’t just using Brazilian rosewood in the 1934D, they’re using the real deal old growth Brazilian. “The Good Stuff” as they say. This guitar took the positives I heard from the other BRW guitars, and turned up the dial to 11. This is truly a lifer. Heirloom quality both in aesthetics and in sound. What is amazing is that this was just finished by your shop earlier this year, so it’s “the worst it is ever going to sound” right now, and it’s already the best guitar I’ve ever played. It will only open up and sound more amazing in the years to come!
